Gordon graduated with a degree in Law in 1976, and joined the Bowater Corporation as a General Management trainee, commencing his working life in the Paper and Packaging industry. His career has taken him into the Automotive Industry, the Music Industry and latterly the Training Industry. His career to date has seen him working in the U.K., North America, Europe and the Middle East.Gordon developed an early interest in motivation at work, as a young manager puzzling over the varied performance of team members. Experience overseas showed that people management challenges were universal, only the local detail changed but never the underlying issues of leadership and motivation.
With much management experience under his belt Gordon entered the world of training and development in 1992. As Operations Director for a medium sized training organisation he observed the successes and failures of various training initiatives and drew conclusions about the shortcomings of traditional approaches to developing managers. In particular the failure of management theory and training seminars to help managers make meaningful and vital changes in themselves.
Gordon founded The Blue Water Partnership in 2000 to offer new and effective methods of helping managers develop. TBWP quickly grew to become a national recognised organisation with clients throughout the UK and growing recognition for its achievements (including a National Training Award).
Gordon had his first book ‘Hidden Treasure (Learning to Lead: the adventure starts here)’ published in 2005, uses an imaginative story telling style to put Assertive Communication, Team Leadership, Coaching, Delegation and Motivation into the context of Team Building. It has proved a powerful development tool for managers who don’t enjoy business books! A sequel ‘Max’ is promised which will deal with the question of how teams become high performers with effective use of Goal Setting and Action Planning, Performance and Change Management, and more.
